What is Shockwave Therapy?

It is not an electrical shock, it’s a soundwave!

Shockwave Therapy is a highly effective, non-invasive treatment, when a pressurised acoustic pulse/wave is sent into an area in the body, that is experiencing specific pain. An example of a shockwave is the sonic boom heard when a plane breaks the sound barrier. The noise created, is the shockwave.

When the wave reaches damaged tissue in the body, it triggers a biological effect that helps to restore the tissue to a healthy state, enabling faster and long term healing.

How we generate Shockwaves

We use a hand held device that is powered by an air compressor, which in turn has a small pellet that travels up and down it, that strikes an end plate. From that end plate, the shockwave is generated and is sent through an attachment on a handheld device, that is held on the body. That sound wave then travels through tissue to reach the painful area.

The benefits of Shockwave

There are many benefits to Shockwave Therapy, as it is a non-invasive treatment, meaning no surgery will be involved. It accelerates healing in the body, reduces pain, and helps you return to a better quality of life, being able to participate in your daily activities.

When you have tried everything else and you are still in pain, Shockwave should be given serious thought to. The National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE) recommends Shockwave for several conditions, with more being added regularly.

How Many Treatments do I Need?

We are guided by current research, and it is suggested that most conditions respond in 3-5 sessions. The sessions ideally should be approximately 7 days apart. Some conditions only need a single treatment though, and more longstanding conditions could take more sessions to reach a satisfactory conclusion. Please remember that every person is different, and every body, responds individually too.

What Should I Expect During Treatment?

We apply a gel to the skin of the affected area (ultrasound gel), then place the Shockwave machines hand held device on the gel/skin. On activation of the treatment, you will feel pulses going into the tissue. This can feel uncomfortable, and if needs be, we will turn the power of the pulses down or up, depending on what you feel. We work to each individuals tolerances for all our treatments. The treatment lasts for a few minutes, with each area we complete. Whilst working in an area, we may change the hand held devises head, so the area coverage of the wave is changed slightly too.

Afterwards

The treatment is pro inflammatory, so we do not recommend taking any anti-inflammatory medication, such as Ibuprofen, as it may slow down the success of the treatment. Lots of people feel pain free after treatment, but occasionally you may feel slightly sore, which could last for a couple of days.
